KIP Digital Printers Question: How do I create a "plot" file? Answer: To learn how to create a "plot" file, click here for detailed written instructions. Question: I have toner from my other office printer. Can I use it in the KIP printer. Answer: The printer models MUST match. We may see the toner as only a black powder but there are many differences between the different models and manufactures of toner. Toner polarity, fusing point, ability to conduct or hold a static charge, partial size are only the beginning of toner technology. If an incorrect toner type is placed into the printer, this can cause extensive damage to many printer components. This will void warranties and effect maintenance programs. If in doubt, please contact your KIP dealer before replacing your toner. Question: My printer appears to consume a larger than normal quantity of toner? Answer: 1) Prints with greater coverage consume more toner. Simply stated if you double your print ( data ) information, your toner consumption will also double. 2) Your copy/print density may be too high. Reduce your density in the scanner and/or density in the Powerprint Controller. 3) An ill maintained printer will cause toner consumption to vary. Arrange a "maintenance schedule" with your local KIP service dealer. Question: Can I re-use the "waste" toner? Answer: No. This waste toner may have media dust in it and has been electrical charged and discharged to a state, which could cause image quality issues and equipment component failure. Question: Can I leave my printer on 24/7? Answer: If you so wish, yes. It is recommended to power off your printer if not used in an eight hour period (after office hours) or at night. Some printers ( KIP 3620, KIP 3400, KIP 7095) have a wire cleaning system which only functions after the printer has been turned off for several hours. This function helps maintain image quality. Question: I have just installed a new roll of media, I get mis-feeds or it doesn't load. Answer: 1) Is the media designed for indirect electrostatic process? 2) Is the media correctly positioned on the roll spindle or roll media shaft? Eg.36" paper on the 36" mark. 3)Is the media width more than 36"? 4)Is the media installed on the shaft with the correct lead edge "roll off" ? 5) Is the roll shaft installed correctly, left to right (180 degrees ). Many roll shafts have a reverse gear. Please check your printer manual. 6) Does the leading edge have excess tear, or is uneven? Question: I seem to get a lot of service calls on my printer? Answer: 1) Is your technician properly trained by KIP America? Please ask your Dealer! 2) Is your volume higher than expected on your printer? Please ask you Dealer! 3) Do you have a maintenance program for your printer? Consult your local KIP Dealer Question: Taped or not Taped? Which roll media type should I use? Answer: In most KIP printers, not taped is preferred. BUT, the printers are designed to accept both media's. The only exception is the Starprint 1230. This printer should use "taped" for "end of roll" detection to function correctly. Question: What media types can be used on the KIP printers? Answer: All KIP printers accept the following media types (roll media stock) for printing / copying. 1) Bonds ( plain paper) 18 lbs., 20 lbs. and 24 lbs. 2) Tinted Bonds ( plain paper ) 18 lbs., 20 lbs. and 24 lbs. 3) Vellums ( non-solvent ) 18 lbs., 20 lbs. and 24 lbs. 4) Trans Bonds 18 lbs., 20 lbs. And 24 lbs. 5) Film* ( mylar ) 3 mil, 3.5 mil and 4 mil *3 mil maximum on the KIP 3620 & KIP 3400. Question: My Request software can't see some .TIF files on the network drive. Answer: Your Request program is configured to recognize the .TIF file extension. Are your file extensions something other than '.TIF?' If they are valid files with a different extension, we can easily add that extension to Request's known file types. There are many varieties of TIFF compression. Normally, if it is a 1-bit tiff file, we can print it.There are certain .tiff flavors that we cannot print. These are: a) TIFF LSB Strips b) TIFF LSB Tiled G4 c) TIFF MSB Strips d) TIFF MSB Tiled G4 Using the version 4.0.29 dated 06.02.00 or later of the PowerPrint software, we have configured the same to 'see' files as are set as 'All ( *.* )' or 'All configured'. In case you have 'All ( *.* ) selected in the Request program, then you should be able to see all files in any particular folder which the Request software looks into. However, if the Request is chosen to see 'all configured', then whichever formats and flavors are preset in the .ini file, those files will be displayed. Question: My scanner/printer/software has locked or not functioning correctly. Answer: 1) Power off all devices. 2) Turn the scanner on, then the printer, then the computer (STF PC or External). 3) See the FAQ Software Support section. 4) If this problem persist, contact your KIP Dealer for your KIP system. Question: When I copy blue background / white line blueprint, all that I get is a blank white page. Answer: Change settings on the Scanner touch screen: Make your settings as: Background= Off; Despeskle= On; Negative= On. With these settings you should be able to get the output you are looking for. Please keep in mind that the Threshold settings (1 to 17) work opposite of their normal use. (adjust lighter to darken the scan) Question: How do I cancel my job, which has already been issued? Answer: There are multiple ways of doing this: a. Remove Job can also be used under the Powerprint Q-manager software. You could turn 'On' the manager mode and double-click and remove, or, from the main tool bar, click on remove job for the same results. b. Under Powerprint Unattend program, turn the "Manager Mode" 'On', and by double-click on the file / job that is currently printing, you could remove it from the print list. c. Go to the \monpath1\request folder on your root directory or where ever you have set the monitor path to, and delete the job from the folder. Question: Can the KIP printer print multi-page TIFF files ? Answer: Powerprint systems support monochrome multi-page TIFF G4 files. So if your files are in the correct format and flavor (TIFF G4), KIP will print it out. Question: Every time that I change the paper roll, I should get a trim sheet. On my machine the trim sheet is not printing ? Answer: Under Powerprint Unattend, please modify the following line: blankprint=C:\programs\trimsht.tlc This will enable your and your printer will start printing trim sheets. In case of using the External Powerprint or Powerprint Max controller, the following keyboard functions available are: F1 : Trim roll 1 F2 : Trim roll 2 F3 : Trim roll 3 F4 : Trim roll 4 Question: Can I submit a Job to another Printer, which is not a KIP printer? Answer: No. The Powerprint Request program (Winreq.exe) reads information from the Winreq.ini file and is connected to the Powerprint Unattend program (Winuntd.exe), which physically drives the KIP engine. Hence, it is not possible to connect any other printer to the Request program. Question: I want to know if we can print PDF, Postscript and JPEG format files? Answer: Solution: For printing .PDF, .PS, .EPS or JPEG files, you have to purchase the Postscript & .PDF print software. This are optional print tools and do not come with the system. Further, using the software, you will be able to print PDF versions 1.2 or below and Postscript levels 1 and 2. Please note that while using the print command, there should be no spaces in file names, and you will NOT be able to view these formats through the Powerprint request software. Question: How many characters can a filename have in KIP software? Request will not process files with long path names. Answer: KIP software can recognize filenames up to 120 characters. Please ensure the files which you wish to print have names (along with their pathing information) equal to or smaller than 120 characters. Question: My Powerprint Request can't see files with long extensions. Answer: You need to update your Powerprint Request program. Please use the Winreq.exe program dated 6/14/00 or later release for a SCSI based system, or, 4/3/00 or later release for non-SCSI systems. Please click here for downloads. Question: I get 'Runtime error 53' when I apply a stamp under Powerprint Request. Answer: Your stamp is either missing or cannot be found. Select stamp option under Request. Check the path of the image listed in the image file box. Go to windows explorer to see of the stamp image exists. If it is not present, then you either need to create one using the same file path or 'uncheck' image and delete the file path in the stamp window under Powerprint request. Question: How do I Force images to print on a particular Roll Size (e.g. 24" Roll), but have variable Length? Answer: Use the following procedure: under Powerprint Request software, Go to Enlarge / Reduce, Force Size, Roll 24, Length 0, Scale to Fit. With these settings, you will be able to get your desired result. Question: On the printout, my line width is too thick. Can I control the thickness of the line ? Answer: Under Powerprint Unattend, go to configuration, Miscellaneous, and decrease the copy density. As a secondary measure, the line 'Addhpglcmd' under the WINUNTD.INI resolves line thickness issues. -W -.5 (Remove ½ pixel to vector data including gray scale, decreases line widths) -W 3.0 (Adds 3 pixels to vector data including gray scale, increases line widths) You could use values from '-3' to '3' pixels in steps of 0.5 to increase or decrease the line thickness of printed data. Also, please make use of the current 'm-files' for this. Question: My grayscale TIF files are not printing correctly. How can I improve the quality of my output? Answer: In your WinUntd.ini at the kip controller, you must add –G 100 in 'AddRasterCMD' for grayscale files to work. Also under 'Addhpglcmd', you should use –h (0, 4, 8) and –D for default DPI (resolution). Also, make use of the most current 'm-files'. Question: I get runtime error 52 when opening in Unattend software ! Answer: This could happen for one of the following reasons: 1) The 'default pen' in Windows Unattend does not open. This pen table may have been removed or deleted. Please make sure that the pen table is present in the \windows unattend\pens folder. Under such a condition, the unattend software will not open at all. Upon installation, the Powerprint Unattend software shares to \Windows Request\Pens folder. Please make sure this path and file are valid. 2) In case the Unattend software gives out this error after loading, then the issue is with the Job tickets. Please clear the job ticket path under \monpath1\request and then try again. 3) If you Requested a job from your workstation, and your WinReq.ini has LOCALREQUEST=TRUE, Request will not copy the file to the controller. It will only send a pointer. Unattend may be looking for a file in its own c:\ or a:\ drive that is actually on your workstation. Remove the job from the Unattend queue, change LOCAL REQUEST to FALSE at your workstation, and send the file again. Question: My print jobs sit in queue in unattend and nothing happens! Answer: Do you have valid roll information? What is the machine status ? Is the printer still warming up? Make sure that the connected printer is 'warmed up' and ready to produce prints. Unless you are printing very large files (5MB+), your file should not be sitting in the queue for more than several seconds. If you are convinced the file has locked up the queue, do a CTRL+ALT+DEL. Go to TASK MANAGER and then PROCESSES. End the Mh2.exe process or the Winuntd.exe program. Then go to your Monpath folder and delete the job. Open Unattend and make sure it opens with no errors. Then try again. Question: When I turn on Manager mode in Powerprint Unattend, a message appears that reads "currently being managed elsewhere". Answer: For one, there could be someone else using the Powerprint Manager program. In case it is not being used, then using windows explorer, open the Monpath1\logdir folder or Log directory you have set, and delete the Manager.kip file. Thereafter you would not get the message. Question: I get runtime error 53 when opening the Unattend software. Answer: Please make sure that the file 'default.pen' is available under \program files\ windows Request\pens. Unattend software will not open if it doesn't find this pen file here. Also, make sure "Last pen= ", is a valid file as listed in the Winreq.ini.
