Large Format Scanning

KIP Related Questions & Answers

Question:
When I scan to copy or scan to file, image is missing from the side(s).
Answer: All KIP scanners auto detect the width of an original when inserted into the scanner. The scanner has two auto detect size modes. 1) Architect and 2) Engineering. Architect width sizes are 36, 30, 24, 18, 12, and 9. Engineer width sizes are 34, 22, 17, 11 and 8.5. If the scanner is set to engineer mode and an architect size is inserted, the scanner will "miss" the additional image outside the standard engineer size. To change the scanner size mode, enter MENU, SETTING, ORIGINAL FORMAT. Select the mode required. See page 3-151 of user manual for more detail. You can also inter the size of image manually (see page 3-125 in User Manual).

Question:  When I attempt to scan to file, frequently a copy will print .
Answer: There are usually two factors which create this issue. 1) Scanner is set to "auto start" while in copy mode, and 2) the original is inserted into the scanner before the scan screen is displayed on the scanner touch screen. If the scanner is in auto start (see page 3-149 of User Manual) and an original is inserted before the "scan" screen appears, the scanner will start to copy. This is the normal function of the scanner. If you have any concern with this, a) disable auto start or b) do not insert an original while scan to file before the touch screen on scanner display.

Question:  I frequently receive an Original Scan error.
Answer:  The original is wider than 36" or inserted incorrect. KIP scanners have a feature to protect your original from damage if wider than image reading surface.

Question: I have vertical lines on my prints or scans.
Answer:  Clean the scanner's original glass. If "dirt" adheres to the image reading glass, this will cause lines on your prints/scans. Clean the glass (see Section 5 of the Users Manual ) with isopropyl alcohol, then glass cleaner. If this doesn't cure the problem, please contact your authorized KIP service rep. He/she may have to replace the glass as it may be scratched from staples, dirt, etc.

Question:  I frequently lose the communication between my scanner and STF station.
Answer:  Depending on the scan to file application, will determine if the following will apply to you. If your scanner enters "rest mode" this turns off all communication with the STF PC. A certain STF application will reestablish communication with the scanner after the rest mode is off. Others will not. If you experience this concern, call your local KIP Service Rep to prevent the scanner from entering rest mode. This will prevent the scans from disabling communication with the STF PC.

Question:  Frequently I will start to scan to print and notice that the paper selection resets to sheet bypass on the printer.
Answer:  This is a normal function of the scanner after a loss of communication with the printer. If you do not use sheet bypass (many do not) have your local service tech disable the "bypass". This will cause the scanner to "default" to roll #1 after a loss of communication with the printer.

Question: When I scan to the buffer of the scanner, I use all the scanner memory quickly.
Answer:  Install more memory. The maximum quantity is 320 MB. If you have the maximum installed, try using line on line photo if image quality is set to photo. Please keep in mind the maximum number of originals the buffer of the scanner will hold is 99. This quantity is always 99 regardless of the quantity of memory installed.

Question: The last set of images scanned is automatically removed from the scanner memory.
Answer:  Turn off the "auto clear" feature in setting MEMORY( page 3-161 in User Manual) With this feature off, the last set or original scanned will remain in the buffer until it is cleared manually or the scanner is powered off.

Question: What does density do in the image quality screen.
Answer:  This controls the volume or quantity of toner applied to the print. The data the scanner reads with not change, only the amount of toner which is placed on the media for that data. The higher the density, the darker ( more dense ) the toner on the print.

Question: The sample button doesn't function
Answer:  The scanner is set to AUTO START. With AUTO START enabled, the SAMPLE function is disabled. (See page 3-149 in User Manual).

Question: I get frequent mis-feeds upon inserting the original (STF or STP).
Answer:  Keep a slight pressure on your original (forward into the scanner) until the first original roller accepts your original. If an original is inserted, the scanner will wait approximately one second to "start". This feature is used to assist you in the correct alignment of the original in the scanner. If the original is not accepted by the first feed rollers, then a mis-feed may occur. This more frequently occurs when you are scanning a larger volume of originals. ( stream feeding )

Question: What is the "fold" function.
Answer:  This currently does not function. This will be used for products KIP develops in the future.

Question: What is the maximum quantity of originals (documents) I can nest (in width or side by side) when using the scan to print NEST feature.
Answer:  The KIP scanners have a feature to allow to stack a quantity of 2 originals wide to a maximum of 99 originals or a total length of 50 feet ( printer must be set to 16 meters or 50 feet mode by a qualified technician ).

Question: What is the maximum scan length.
Answer:  The default length for KIP E model printers is 20 feet (6 meters) A qualified KIP technician can program the maximum length us to 50 feet or 16 meters. Please discuss this with your local KIP service technician.

Question: When I use de-speckle too much information is removed (or not enough) when I scan to print ( Copy Mode ).
Answer:  The amount of de-speckle can be set by your KIP service technician. Please contact him/her to increase or decrease the de-speckle amount. Please notice that the maximum the de-speckle function will remove is 6 X 6 pixels. The factory setting is 3 X 3 pixels. Please note that is you scan to file, many STF applications can de-speckle a greater quantity of the originals is scan to file.(such as Scan Client or Spicer Imagination).

Question: What type of SCSI cable do we use with the SCSI scanners ? How many pins is it and how long is the cable?
Answer: We need a high density, 50 pins, 6 foot cable which has male to male connectors at both ends.

Question: I am inserting 24" width paper into the scanner. While scanning, the image is being cut off on both sides.
Answer: This requires you to change the scanner from Engineering mode to architectural mode. 22" x 34" is the 'D' size for engineering documentation, while as architectural chooses 24" x 36" for the 'D' size. So, even if you are inserting 24" width of the document and the scanner is under engineering mode, it will clip of 1" of data on both sides of the image. Please see procedure in the users manual to do this changeover from engineering to architectural mode.

Question: ASPI Error: No K-75 Found! When trying to scan.
Answer: Please make sure that the scanner is powered on and initialized completely before powering on controller. This is the procedure for powering on the machines. Until the scanner is initialized, the SCSI BIOS does not detect its existence.

Question: What is the difference between the Powerprint Scan and the KIP Scan program?
Answer: The Powerprint Scan software is a part of the Powerprint suite used to run the KIP scanners. In this program and its .ini file (winscan.ini), you have the choice to link it to any raster editor, and photo editing software. The Powerprint scan allows you to check on "Concurrent Print" from within the Scan program to make a "Request" to print from the Scan program directly to a KIP machine as you are scanning your documents to file.

Like the Powerprint Scan, the KIPScan also had a very powerful viewer, but cannot be substituted with other 3rd party application viewers.

Question: Can older scanners use the SCSI software?
Answer: No. Only those Scanners that use a SCSI KIP card inside the scanner and connected to the Adaptec SCSI card work with the SCSI software. Besides the driver software for the SCSI card, a separate WINSCAN.exe and KIPScan.exe are required to run the KIP SCSI range of scanners.

Question: While scanning, I get a black Line on the right side of the scanned image.
Answer: You are required to upgrade the scanning software. Please copy the 'kipscan.exe' and 'Winscan.exe' file, dated 08/31/00 or later from the Powerprint 4.1B CD. These are available under the "Current exes and Inis" folder. The update is also available here

Question: I insert a document into the scanner and using the Kipscan software, click on the Scan button to do scanning. However, I get no response from the scanner, but software displays Error Sensorkey ID…. What do I do ?
Solution: It is required to disable the 'Power warm-up mode' on the scanner. Only a qualified service personnel should do this. To do this, you have to go to the "BACKUP DATA MODE" on the Scanner. Please press '.', 1, 3, 5 on the Scanner top panel to go to "SERVICE MODE". In the menu screen, choose the "BACKUP DATA MODE". Select serial '13' on the LHS of the panel. You can increment serial number using the arrow up/down keys. The value set for this serial to disable the 'Power warm-up mode' is '0'. After selecting, go back and press '.', 1 to exit. Please reboot, and you would now be able to proceed further on scanning.
