Question:
How do I scan to a floppy?
Answer:
The diagram below illustrates choosing the 'A:\" drive instead of the "C:\" drive or any other network drive. Please change the drive letter in the designated area below, and you shall be able to scan images to the 'A:\" drive (floppy disk). In general, scanning to a floppy is NOT the best way to store images. The Powerprint Scan software does not detect disk space available during scanning. It is best to scan the documents to the C: drive then copy them to the floppy via Windows Explorer.

Question:
I am trying to upgrade my software from 3.5e to 4.1b. KIPscan gives me an error and does not work!
Answer:
The version 4.1B is for SCSI-based scan devices. The maximum version you could go to for using older scanners, printers or reprographic systems is version 4.0D. You need to uninstall the 4.1B and reinstall the 4.0D on your controller to make this work.

Question: What is the Data Field used for when the Winscan.ini has the Data field=T set ?
Answer: In this field we have the choice of entering ASCII data that is written into an ASCII file (database.asc). ASCII file data is generally importable into a number of imaging databases. With this Functionality, we can directly link ASCII information into any compatible data base utility.

Question: I loaded the PowerPrint software on my laptop for demo purposes, but the programs won't open. Why ?
Answer: On Installing Powerprint Programs for Demo Purposes.

The PowerPrint programs can be loaded onto laptops or workstations for demo purposes. In these cases, we must tell the software that there is no printer or scanner connected. This is done with a few simple changes to the configuration files. For ease of setup, we recommend you install the software packages to their default file locations.

* Install the Scan software.
* Use Windows Explorer to browse to c:\program files\windows scan
* Open the configuration file winscan.ini
* In the second paragraph, find the line that says HardwareConnect= and change it to NO
* Close the window and save the changes when prompted.
* The Scan software should now open properly
* Install the Request software. Use the Request95/98 version if possible.
* Usually no changes need to be made in this configuration file. If the Request program does not
open, it's usually because of a pathing error in the configuration file. Use Windows Explorer to
browse to c:\program files\windows request. Open winreq.ini. Check the line TempDir= and make
sure it is a valid path. Check the rest of the paths in that file for any that might be incorrect.
* Install the Unattend software.
* Use Windows Explorer to browse to c:\program files\windows unattend
* Open the configuration file winuntd.ini
* I n the third paragraph, modify the TempDir= line to reflect a valid temp directory.
* In the fifth paragraph, modify the HardwareConnect= line to FALSE
* If you are not running on WinNT, you will need to go down to the seventh paragraph that starts
with PrintExe=. In that paragraph you will see four lines that contain \ds as part of the path.
* Remove the \ds reference from those four lines.
* Close the window and save the changes when prompted.
* Use Explorer to browse to c:\programs. Verify that it contains a file called shell.dat. If not, copy
shell.dat from the software CD to c:\programs. It is on the CD in a folder called Current EXEs and
   INIs.
* The Unattend software should now open properly.

FYI....
Runtime 76=Path Not Found. One of the paths in your configuration is incorrect.

Runtime 53=File Not Found. Your paths are correct, but the file is not in the expected location. Usually shell.dat is missing from c:\programs.

Question:
After loading Request software, I am not able to view plot files. It says 'Invalid plot files' I am using a third party CAD application software.
Answer:
When using any other CAD application besides AutoCAD 14, AutoCAD 2000 or AutoCAD 2000i, you must plot your vector files to an HPGL/HPGL-2 or HPRTL compatible .PLT file. Your .PLT files will now be viewable under the Windows Request program.

Question:
I did a fresh install of the Powerprint Request program from the network drive. The new installation of Request is no longer able to find roll information on the printer. Powerprint request software displays "communication error"
Answer:
The Powerprint Unattend program writes out roll information to a folder of your choice, usually to the server so that everyone can read it. While using the Powerprint Unattend software, go to configuration / miscellaneous, and note the path for the Log file directory. This is where the roll information is being stored. (i.e. \\server\monpath1\logdir) Now, open C:\Program Files\Windows Request\Winreq.ini and modify "STATUSDIR" to reflect the same path. Close and save the winreq.ini. Please make sure that before saving the Powerprint request software is not open. This above information will assist you in eliminating the communication error.

Question:
In the Powerprint Request Pen table, how can we type in Pen widths, which are not available in the Pen table. Why are there gaps in the spaces between say .25mm and .30 mm ?
Answer:
Each and every of your Pens# (0-255) have selectable widths. Under width, there are 2 sets of numbers. On the left are numbers from 0 to 255. Please do not confuse these 0-255 numbers under width to be Pen numbers. The numbers under pen width are basically values, which are in thousands of an inch. This means, if you select a value 9 here (which is empty otherwise on the RHS of the width table), you are actually selecting 9/1000 = 0.009 of an inch, which is 0.2286 mm. The reason why there is a gap between 0.25mm and 0.30 mm (or likewise) is because there are no "real" metric equivalent values. We prefer to leave the metric equivalent values in whole metric number. Hence, the minimum pen width selection is in steps of one thousandth of an inch (0.001") or 0.0254mm. However, please also note that the minimum width that you could select is "Width 4" or 4/1000 of an inch (1 pixel) or 0.1016mm. There after you could select width 5 upwards to increment in steps of 1/1000 of an inch.

Question:
I do my printing via the Microstation. How do I link the Powerprint Request.ini file (winreq.ini) through the Microsation based system to see the requester information?
Answer:
Just like we have the Winreq.ini file linked with AutoCAD R14 (the ADI driver) and AutoCAD 2000/2000i (the HDI driver), the link program for the Microstation software is under development. Once the driver is released, the same shall be available to download from the web site. Kindly bear with us for some more time. However, for the time being, you could choose the HPGL2 as your driver to get a valid .PLT file from Microstation. This HPGL-2 .PLT file can be viewed under the Powerprint Request software, and can be printed to the KIP printer.

Question:  I have extremely thin lines on my drawing. My gray scale patterns cause these thin lines to break up. Can I do something about this ?
Answer: The dither pattern for grayscale is difficult on thin lines because we make dots to emulate grays. In order to avoid broken lines, you could make the line width larger or darken the RTL (HP Raster density) under Unattend, Configuration, Plot file setup, Advanced Settings, HP RTL to get darker dots in print. Also, The line Addhpglcmd' under the WINUNTD.INI resolves line thickness issues.

- W -.5 (Remove ½ pixel to vector data including gray scale, affects line widths)
- W 3.0 (Adds 3 pixels to vector data including gray scale, affects line widths)

You could use values from '-3' to '3' pixels in steps of 0.5 to increase or decrease the line thickness of printed data. Also, please make use of the current 'm-files' for this.

Question:  How can we print images containing vector data when a drawing has large margins?
Answer:  There are two ways in which this can be done. Under Powerprint Unattend go to 'plot file setup', 'advanced settings'. Click 'clip to image size' 'ON' to print out such images. Also, you may go to Powerprint Request, plot file setup, advanced settings to activate the 'clip to image size' function.

Question:  I installed NT and the Kip software manually with my Kit. All of my software dates are in place, but Unattend will not open. How do I make it work? Also, the KIP-drvr.sys driver does not start after manual install ? how to make it work ?
Answer:  Differences between KIP Interface Cards & Drivers:

Kipdrvr.sys, kdrvr_p.sys and kdrvr_s.sys

There are four possible interface cards that may be loaded in your KIP controller:

1) A card for scanning/printing. This card can be identified by a number identifying the speed of the card in millimeters (4,8,12 or 16) followed by a dash, then a four digit serial number. For example: 8-1234. This number reflects an 80 speed card, #1234.

2) A card for scanning. This card can be identified by a number identifying the speed of the card in millimeters (4,8,12 or 16) followed by the letter 'S', then a dash, then a four digit serial number. For example: 8S-1234. This number reflects an 80 speed scanner card, #1234.

3) A card for printing. This card can be identified by a number identifying the speed of the card in millimeters (4,8,12 or 16) followed by the letter 'P', then a dash, then a four digit serial number. For example: 8P-1234. This number reflects an 80 speed card, #1234. A printer only system would use an interface card only. A MAX system or a SCSI+Printer system would have this card with a bypass cable attached.

4) A DOS interface card. This card may numerically appear exactly as a scanning/printing card. It may only be identifiable by a programming test.

Which System uses which card?

A legacy 'Standard' system (one that cannot scan and print at the same time) uses a scanning/printing card. Some models would include 2900, 3820-standard, 7095-standard, 9820-standard. The driver for this card is kipdrvr.sys.

A legacy 'Printer-only' system also uses the same scanning/printing card. Some models would include 2710, 3620, 9010. Again, the driver for this card is kipdrvr.sys.

A legacy 'Scanner-only' system will only use the kdrvr_s.sys driver. Some models may include 2021, 2022, 2030, 2032, 2035, 2040.

A legacy 'MAX' system (one that can scan and print at the same time) uses a scanning card and a printing card with a bypass cable. Some models would include 2950M, 3820M, 3900M, 7095M, 9820M, 9900M. The drivers for these cards are kdrvr_p.sys and kdrvr_s.sys.

A PowerPrint SCSI system uses a printer card with a bypass cable. The driver for this card is kdrvr_p.sys. The PowerPrint SCSI system uses a standard SCSI card as its scanning interface. The driver for the SCSI card is supplied by the card manufacturer and not by KIP.

How do you register the drivers?

If you're installing KIP software on a new install of Windows NT, as opposed to ghosting, the drivers will be loaded to the correct location, but you will need to register them. This is a simple process. Just about every software CD we send out has a folder on it called REGISTRY FILES or a variation thereof. Inside you will find a program called REGINI.EXE and the instruction files for each driver. The process must be done in DOS, using DOS commands.

1) From Windows, go to START, PROGRAMS, COMMAND PROMPT. It will open the DOS window.

2) Switch to your CD-ROM drive. Example:> e:\ (enter)

3) Get a current directory by typing DIR (enter)

4) Change Directories to the REGISTRY FILES folder. Example:> CD (space) registry files (enter). Or CD (space) regist~1 (enter). Use the exact spelling that your DIR command showed you.

5) Now we will run the registry program, followed by the file we are trying to register. Examples:> regini (space) kipdrvr.ini (enter) or

Regini (space) kdrvr_p.sys (enter)

Regini (space) krdrvr_s.sys (enter)

6) You will see the screen fill with text each time. If the driver has already been registered, you will only see a couple of lines. Alter the process for the drivers that your system requires. Type EXIT to get back to Windows. Then reboot.

How can you tell which driver(s) are running?

Go to START, SETTINGS, CONTROL PANEL, DEVICES. Scroll down the list to get to the Ks. You may see one or more of the three KIP drivers in the list (kipdrvr.sys, kdrvr_p.sys, kdrvr_s.sys). The status may be listed as STARTED. The STARTUP method may be listed as SYSTEM or DISABLED.

You can disable a driver or change the status of it by highlighting the appropriate file, clicking the STARTUP button, then choosing DISABLE or the desired checkbox. To start a driver in the list, follow the same procedure but choose SYSTEM.

Some users register all three drivers and then turn off the ones they don't require.

How can you check the software revision on your card?

1) From Windows, go to START, PROGRAMS, COMMAND PROMPT. It will open the DOS window.

2) Change Directories to the PROGRAMS folder. Example:> CD (space) programs (enter).

3) Type kiptest (enter) at the command prompt. If the card is not present, you will get the msg: Can't get a handle to KIP driver.

4) Normally, the computer will report that it Retrieved Handle For KIP Driver, and will prompt to Select Option. Hit D for display.

5) A page of text will appear. The BoardRev will appear in the upper left corner. It will reflect 00, 10 or 1a. The most current board revision to date is 1a. If you don't have boardrev:1a, please contact digital support regarding an upgrade.

6) Hit X to exit the Kiptest program.

How can you test the connection between the Interface Card(s) and the Printer/Scanner?

Winstat is a great program for testing communication on your system and for checking your current file dates.

1) Use Explorer to browse to c:\programs. Double-click on the program Winstat.exe, "the one that looks like a wrench." You may also find this program in the PowerPrint Diagnostics folder on the desktop on a default install.

2) As soon as the program opens, it will try to test communication to your printer. Normally, it will tell you COPIER BOARD FOUND, and then list a bunch of specifics about your hardware, including paper rolls installed, etc.

3) To test communication with the scanner, click the SCANNER dot towards the bottom and hit the READ STATUS button. It will display a screen nearly identical to the plotter screen.

4) Winstat is also a great way to check and print out your current KIP file dates. Hit DISPLAY FILE DATES to see your current dates, and PRINT FORM to print it out via the KipJet driver.

Question:  What do you mean by 'legacy?'
Answer: Legacy refers to our older, non-scsi scanners and systems.

Question:  I loaded the software from on a new install of NT and now I get Print Error 51. - Why?
Answer: Either you haven't loaded any drivers for the interface card, or you've loaded the wrong ones. Check the DEVICES window to see which ones are running.

Question:  If I have a printer-only system, I need to use Kdrvr_p.sys, correct?
Answer: Actually, no. The correct driver would be kipdrvr.sys.

Question:  I am losing data on my printout. I checked the file I am printing on the controller, but the printout has missing data
Answer: In the Winuntd.ini file, please make sure that you remove the "-k" function in the 'Addhpgl' command line. This will resolve the issue for loss of data. Kindly also e-mail the file to KIP America's digital support department to fix the issue for you.

Question:  During manual install, how to get NT to recognize disk drives greater than 8GB?
Answer: You will most likely need to do an initial install of NT with an 8GB limitation. After NT is Installed, load the latest NT service pack. Then you'll be able to format and modify the leftover space of your Hard Disk. You could also use one of the following ways to get the requirement large storage space on your desktop / controller.

1) There is a 'large disk patch' available under Microsoft Windows web site under Service pack 4. Try to use this to create large disk sizes. However, to us this feature, you will need to have Windows NT installed on your machine.
2) Install the hard drive into another desktop using Windows NT operating system. The 2nd hard drive can be installed as a secondary hard disk drive. You could use the 'disk administrator' function under Windows NT to create a large size drive onto another storage device.

Question:  How to view HPGL and TIF files in AIX UNIX environment?
Answer: You need to have a separate viewer to view files in AIX UNIX environment. Powerprint software does not do this.

Question:  When I copy blue background / white line blueprint, all that I get is a blank white page.
Answer: Change settings on the Scanner touch screen: Make your settings as:

Background= Off; Despeskle= On; Negative= On. With these settings you should be able to get the output you are looking for. Please keep in mind that the Threshold settings (1 to 17) work opposite of their normal use. (adjust lighter to darken the scan)

Question:   I have a printfold folder attached to my printer. Whenever the folder jams, the Unattend software does not stop. It keeps on printing in which case I get sometimes 3 or even upto 4 drawings stuck in the folder.
Answer: To be able to use the Winuntd program and get it to stop, the following must be checked. In the winuntd.ini file, the following line is to be modified:
UsePrintFold=True. Generally and by default, this is set to false.
Also, make sure that the serial cable from the Printfold machine is connected to the KIP controller's COM2 port.
If Unattend software is set to folder, and PRINTFOLD = true, and the serial cable is connected, this will stop Unattend software.

Question: We are trying to convert a Tiff G3 file to Tiff G4 file since the printer prints Tiff G4 files. When we convert using the Powerprint Request software, we only get a 1KB file. Also, we can't print the original Tiff G3 file.
Answer: We do not support printing from Tiff G3 format, and the Request software is not designed to do so. You are required to convert the G3 format to a G4 format using a specialized format converting software (e.g. Imagenation software by Spicer), save the file as a TIFF G4 file, and then submit the G4 format file for printing.

Question: I use Solid Works 3D software. Can we print from this software to a KIP printer ?
Answer: We need an HPGL/HPGL-2 compatible file format to print to a KIP printer. In case you are able to generate a HPGL compatible file through Solid works 3D software, it will work.

Question: Event viewer shows network errors. Controller lock-ups (hard), cannot even do ctrl-alt-del
Answer: This could be due to a number of reasons. To try one, please do the following:

a. Un-install the network card driver from your controller.
b. Remove the network card.
c. Shutdown and reboot your PC. The KIP I/F card will take the available IRQ settings.
d. Shutdown again, and install NIC (network card) with its drivers.

Most of the times, it's because of this IRQ clash that the controller fails to respond. Trying the above should give you the desired solution.

Question:  Can we Scan multi-page TIFF files ?
Solution: No, you cannot scan files in multi-page. However, you have a feature in the Powerprint Scan software to do batch mode scanning. Under the Powerprint Scan program, you have a feature called as 'Auto mode' which enables 'Auto scan mode' with which you could do the batch scanning.

Question: I print from the KipJet driver, and nothing happens. I do not get any printouts.
Answer: It seems the output of your Printer driver does not print the file to the raster monitor path. On Windows95/98 or NT, please go to "Start – settings – Printers" and right click on KIPJet printer to view the menu for the KIPJet printer. Under 'Properties' here, your path under "Output' should "point' to the raster folder which the Powerprint Unattend software monitors to pick up files for printing.

Question: Why do I Ghost the controller? Why can't I just install the system software and drivers one by one?
Answer: You certainly have both the choices. You could follow the manual install procedure in the manual, or choose to ghost. The basic purpose of giving you a Ghost CD is that the KIP driver software along with WindowsNT, SP5 and drivers for interface, network and video cards are built in into the ghost CD. Most importantly, it's the time factor. For it may take a couple of hours to do the job to install one by one, you could do the same in less than 10 minutes utilizing the ghost method.

Question:  How do I ghost my controller?
Answer:  Please make sure that you do not have any important data on your hard drive. Ghosting will re-write the entire hard disk and all data present on the disk will be lost. In case it is important that ghosting must be done, each and every step, which you might need in during the ghosting, is available as a part of the technical manual. In case you do not have the technical manual, please give us a call and we shall send you the section of the manual by email.

Question:  Which Ghost menu choice should I choose from?
Answer: There are mainly 2 choices, which we have. One of them is for controllers using the motherboards from ABIT, and the second are the ones using motherboards from Supermicro. The *.imc (ghost) files on the CD are Abit.imc and sm.imc. Depending upon which kind of the controller you would have, you have to use one of the 2 files from the CD. As of 09/00, the Powerprint standard configuration comes with a single processor on a Supermicro motherboard and the STF or the Powerprint Max controllers use dual-processors on a Supermicro motherboard. On the older systems, one may have the single and dual-processor ABIT motherboards . The way of distinguishing the two motherboards is that the ABIT motherboard has brightly colored ports at the back of the controller.

Question: I get error 2120 when ghosting.
Answer: Your Ghost recovery license had expired. Please contact KIP America for the new release.

Question:  What is Powerprint?
Answer: Powerprint, or Powerprint suite, is a collective name given to the group of software packages, which run the KIP America's range of digital scanners, printers and copiers. These are:

a. Powerprint Scan (Program file: Winscan.exe, associated .ini file: winscan.ini)
The Powerprint Scan software is the interface with the KIP line of Scanners, giving the user the utmost flexibility in setting/adjusting parameters for scanning original documents to file and for set copy operations.
b. Powerprint Request (Program file: Winreq.exe, associated .ini file: winreq.ini)

The Powerprint Request software is used to create job tickets to submit documents (or sets of documents) for print. Powerprint Request can also be used from a remote workstation, enabling any CAD user to print collated sets across the network without having to leave their seat.

c. Powerprint Unattend (Program file: Winuntd.exe, associated .ini file: winuntd.ini)
The Powerprint Unattend program is closely linked to the Powerprint Request module. Once a Powerprint requester submits a print request, the Powerprint Unattend monitors the requests for printing. The Powerprint Unattend software is used as the KIP print queue with local print management features. When you open the Unattend program, you will notice the model of your system displayed in the heading of the Powerprint Unattend Interface.

d. Powerprint Q-manager (Program file: Winmanager.exe, associated .ini file: winmanager.ini)

The Powerprint Q-Manager software allows for remote viewing and manipulation of jobs in the print queue of any KIP machine on the network and print job reports based on Username or Job number. Manager can be used to manage jobs on the KIP Powerprint Controller or from a remote workstation. Although the interface is very similar to Unattend, Q-Manager has one benefit overt the Powerprint Unattend: If you open Manager before Unattend, you can move any job to first place in the queue, where Unattend automatically grabs the first requested job and begins printing, allowing you to only move the second job and below.

Question:  Can I mix versions of Powerprint software (different files from version 3 and version 4) ?
Answer: We recommend you NOT to use old and new versions together.

Question:  Do I have to use the Powerprint programs?
Answer: The Powerprint Scan (winscan.exe) is the scanner software for your scanner (SCSI or non SCSI systems).

The Powerprint Request (Winreq.exe) is required to submit job tickets for printing. The Powerprint Request allows you to choose media, enlargement/reduction, no. of copies, pen tables, etc for printing. Several users have in fact written their own variations that create an ASCII Job Ticket that is compatible with the KIP Printers. If you wish to receive the document "KIP Integration Information, please call KIP America digital support at 1.248.474.2900

The Powerprint Unattend (Winuntd.exe) is the backbone of the Powerprint suite. The Powerprint Unattend directly communicates with the printer for printing. It allows special functions (clip to image size, pen tables, using colors), hence is the most essential program of the KIP family.

Even when you would use AutoCAD ADI, HDI or the windows printer driver, you are still going to use the Powerprint Unattend software running in the background. So, this is the most critical than the other programs in the Powerprint suite.

The Powerprint Manager is the managing program for companies printing large number of drawings in a set. Mainly for the purpose of convenience that you would be able to move jobs up down in the print queue, move jobs to another KIP Printer, print Job Reports based on Job Numbers, or remove the jobs, or change media

Question: During upgrading any Powerprint software, do I have to un-install first?
Answer: It is always better to un-install the existing package off your Controller, before re-installing a fresh update. You should also re-start your controller after any upgrade.

Question:  How do I upgrade?
Answer: Under "Control panel", "add/remove programs", go and remove the installed piece of the resident Powerprint software. Use your KIP driver CD to re-install the upgrade package. Upon making the re-install, kindly make sure that you restart the controller for all settings to take effect.

Question: I installed software for a model XXXX, but now all of my programs say 2950! Why?
Answer: Upon fresh / new install, all Powerprint programs default to 2950 machine. Please make modifications in the respective .ini files (winscan.ini. winuntd.ini, winmanager.ini and winreq.ini) to make sure that they correspond to the machine you have in-house.

Question: Can I print from the viewer software that opens up files from inside the Powerprint Request program?
Answer: By default, the Powerprint Request program is linked to the "Ultrav.exe" file, which is the viewer, which is used by the Powerprint Request program. The "Ultrav.exe" program opens like any other viewing software. It has a print command set available in the program. Hence, you could use the "Ultrav.exe" program to print using the default printer under Windows applications. In case you have the KIP windows printer driver loaded on the controller, you could use the "Ultrav.exe" program to print directly to a KIP printer.

Question: Will my printer board from the 2900 machine drive a Starprint 4000 engine?
Answer: The 2900 unit is driven through a 40mm/sec board inside the controller and is connected to the scanner and the Starprint 4000 unit is driven though a 80mm/sec board and is connected to the Printer. Hence the 2900 board will not work with the SP4K.

Question: On the controller, when I try to make a print to the KIP printer, the printout won't come out even if the paper is there in the machine. The rolls won't switch at any time. Controller displays "please insert paper"
Answer: Please make sure that you are not printing using the "force size' option to a different size paper width, other than what is available in the printer. You would need to have the correct size of paper width to print using 'Force Size". In case you are not using the "Force Size' feature, then under "Powerprint Unattend", "Configuration", "Misc. Config"., please set Rolls to "Auto" to enable the machine to switch rolls for printing.

Question: I keep getting runtime error 70 again and again. The Powerprint Unattend software will not open. It just sits on the screen without any activity.
Answer: Most of the time this happens when you have MH2.exe file still running and not exiting from the Windows NT task manager. End this program activity first before you are able to re-start into the Powerprint suite. Also, you are requested to send us the file that caused the error by email for further examination. (Please use the following email address: Rmadan@Kipamerica.com)

Question: What is the basic interface cards difference between the Powerprint controller and the Powerprint Max Controller?
Answer: The Powerprint Max controller has 2 KIP I/F cards, one of them is with a bypass port, and allows simultaneous printing and scanning. The standard Powerprint controller has 1 I/F port for either scanning or printing at one point of time.
